Depending on the airline, most pilots are allowed to look through a few newspapers in the journey. But they are not allowed to read a book. The reason is that the news in the newspaper is often short, and it does not distract the mission of the pilot. But if it’s a book or novel, the captain may be drawn to the story and neglect to fly the plane for long enough to be dangerous. Therefore, books are always prohibited from being brought into the cockpit.
It is believed that pilots can easily get caught up in stories, and neglect to supervise the flight. At an altitude lower than 10,000 m (usually during takeoff and landing), flight attendants are not allowed to talk to the pilot. This is the time the pilot needs the most concentration. Today, most pilots read only flight-related documents and do their jobs while in the cockpit.
